Why we developed the first DUAROK Sock
Before designing any product, we asked a simple question:
What do runners actually need?
Not what looks good on a shelf.
Not what trends on social media.
But what genuinely improves the experience of going out for a run.
One answer kept coming up again and again.
Socks.
They’re one of the smallest pieces of running gear, but they play one of the biggest roles in how a run feels.
When socks work well, you barely notice them.
When they don’t, they can ruin a run completely.
Blisters.
Hot spots.
Sliding fabric.
Socks wearing out after a few months, or even a few weeks as we found out.
We felt there was an opportunity to do better.
A background in clothing
In another life, before DUAROK and before moving to Sweden, our founder Jonathan was involved in producing millions of garments every year for large retail organisations, primarily in the UK but with international reach.
Clothing manufacturing had been part of his world for decades.
But when Jonathan moved to Sweden during COVID, he took a step away from work and spent time thinking about something bigger:
What is my purpose?
Running had become a new passion. Long runs, challenges and time outdoors brought clarity. And one idea began to stand out above everything else.
If movement had the power to change lives, perhaps inspiring others to move could be the purpose.
That was the beginning of the DUAROK movement.
Turning purpose into action
If you want to inspire people to move more, you need a platform that allows you to support that mission.
Communities.
Events.
Challenges.
Encouragement.
All of these require resources.
And that led to a simple realisation:
If DUAROK was going to grow into something that could genuinely inspire people, it needed a sustainable way to fund the initiatives behind the movement.
At the same time, something else became clear.
When we looked at the clothing we were using ourselves for running and training, we often struggled to find products that were:
-
durable
-
responsibly made
-
reasonably priced
Some brands focused purely on performance.
Others focused heavily on sustainability but came with a very high price tag.
It felt like there was room for something different.
Using experience to do things better
With decades of experience and buidling contacts in clothing production, Jonathan felt it was time to use that knowledge and trust he had built up differently.
Instead of simply producing garments at scale for large retailers, the aim with DUAROK is to build products thoughtfully and responsibly, focusing on durability, materials and real use.
The goal is simple:
Create clothing that, if chosen instead of the highest-volume products on the market, could help reduce waste and use the planet’s resources more responsibly.
At the same time, if chosen instead of some of the most expensive niche brands, it would offer better value for the runner.
In short:
Bring sustainable, durable clothing to ordinary people - because we need it.
Starting slowly and doing things properly
DUAROK won’t chase trends.
And it won’t launch dozens of products all at once - not right now anyway.
Instead, we are starting with individual products, focusing on understanding exactly what people who move actually need.
Once we understand the purpose of the product, we look at the materials available to achieve it.
Sometimes natural fibres work best.
Sometimes man-made fibres are necessary to achieve durability and performance.
The key principle is simple:
Use the right materials for the right purpose - and always try to do the responsible thing.
Why we started with a sock
The DUAROK sock is the first product we are launching.
And the main focus behind it is durability.
We set ourselves a simple target:
Create a sock that runners can rely on for at least 500km.
Why?
Because the longer a product lasts:
-
the fewer resources are used
-
the less waste ends up in landfill
-
the better value it becomes for the person wearing it
If a pair of socks can last longer without holes appearing, without thinning, and without becoming uncomfortable, that’s better for the planet and better for your pocket.
The first step in a longer journey
The DUAROK sock is only the beginning.
Over time we plan to introduce more products built with the same philosophy:
Thoughtful design.
Durability.
Responsible materials.
Real value.
Because the goal is not simply to make clothing.
The goal is to create products that support movement and help more people feel comfortable getting outside and being active.
And if that helps inspire more people to move, even a little more often, then we’ll know we’re heading in the right direction.
